Joel Fletcher Artist Statement

Painting of a man holding out a lantern in an effort to see into a dark cave entrance.

My paintings blend imagination, symbolism, and technique to create worlds that evoke curiosity and contemplation. Whether I'm depicting mythological creatures, prehistoric life, metaphysical ideas or the serenity of a landscape, I attempt to integrate the seen and the unseen, and the physical detail of form and light with an air of mystery. I begin with a philosophical, scientific, or naturalistic concept that I compose with attention to texture, focus, and color harmonies to give the piece a sense of depth and presence.

Recurring themes of duality, pareidolia, and the relationship between matter and spirit fill my work, but each painting is a singular entity. I frequently sculpt or photograph reference material, observe the natural world with great detail, and develop my compositions as a storyteller would develop a narrative. This conceptual foundation carries through to the tiniest details. Since 1974, I have signed each painting in a style specific to that piece, so my signature is part of the art and not a standard mark.

Ultimately, I strive to create paintings that give the viewer a multi-layered experience - an immediate impression and then the nuances that become apparent when looking more closely. Each piece is my own curiosity and a mirror for you to discover your own wonder.
